Charles Franklin Chamberlain Exhibit
A week ago I visited the Ella Sharp Museum in Jackson, MI to see the Charles Franklin Chamberlain exhibit... my grandpa! I wish my dad and aunt could have seen it. Maybe they are looking down from above. I believe they would be proud to see their dad's work on display.
My Aunt Joyce was a huge help in writing the biography Charles Franklin Chamberlain : Drawn to France and in helping me organize materials. I came to believe that neither her nor my dad ever realized exactly how many canvases, art books, sketchbooks, paints, painting materials, photos, glass plate negatives and other ephemeral items were stored away in dusty corners and spider filled attics.
Joyce died in November of 2018. I had already been working with someone for a while at this stage on the artwork. We started an endless cycle of restoring a painting to sell to get money to restore paintings to sell to get money to restore paintings.... you get the idea. Lots were sold as is - like sketches. I probably sold more than I wanted to, but the goal I made with Joyce was to get his artwork out into the world and enjoyed instead of piled together in old pizza boxes and trunks.
I think we met that goal.
I am very thankful that my grandpa's art is being shared with the world and enjoyed. If you too want to experience the exhibit, it is heading to the Hickman Gallery at Adrian College and then off to Olivet University.
Carpe diem! (which I know is Latin, but isn't it universally understood?)
